A SYMBOL OF PEACE DESECRATED

Mahatma Gandhi Statue in Davis

The desecration of the Mahatma Gandhi Statue in Davis, California on January 26, 2021 is a tragic event.

The Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County stands in solidarity with the Indian Community in lamenting the desecration of Gandhi’s Statue in California and elsewhere.

Our hearts go out to the Indian Community as we pledge to renew our commitment to the ideals and teachings of Gandhi.  The people of the United States are understanding anew how important it is to erect and maintain statues, memorials, and markers dedicated to people who uphold the highest ideals of what it means to be a civilized society insuring the rights and dignity of all peoples.

We call to mind the words of our beloved Gandhi:

“Anger and intolerance are the enemies of correct understanding.

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Our hope is that one day soon, monuments and memorials like the beloved statues of Gandhi, will be gathering sites where people who have disputes and issues can find common ground, reconciliation, and serenity of heart.

We urge the city of Davis to restore the Statue of Gandhi to its rightful place, so we are not only reminded of the wisdom of Mahatma’s words but also can imitate the courageous example of his life.
