Community-wide Kristallnacht Commemoration: The Crime of Complicity

Sunday, November 12, 3:00 PM
Congregation B’nai Tikvah
25 Hillcroft Way, Walnut Creek

If you are a bystander and witness a crime, should intervention to prevent that crime be a legal obligation? Intertwining the personal with historical scholarship, Amos Guiora will take us on a journey back to the Holocaust to understand the complicity of bystanders who watched his father on a death march in Serbia. Guiora asks whether bystanders had a legal duty to intervene, and, if so, what actions were they required to undertake. His is a powerful voice in today’s chaotic world of increasing intolerance and hatred: What are our moral and sacred responsibilities?

Amos Guiora is Professor of Law at the University of Utah and Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) in the Israel Defense Forces. He is the author of several books, including The Crime of Complicity and Tolerating Intolerance: The Price of Protecting Extremism. Admission is free and open to the public.

Presented by the Contra Costa JCC and Cong. B’nai Tikvah.
Co-sponsors: Cong. B’nai Shalom, Diablo Valley Hadassah and Temple Isaiah.
