Adult Education Students Showcase Their Talent!

On Wednesday, May 10, 2017 the public will have an exclusive opportunity to view innovative and original talent at the Transition Options Program (TOPS) 5th Annual Creativity Expo from 6:30pm- 8:30pm at Loma Vista Adult Center, 1266 San Carlos Ave, Concord (Multi-Use Room).  Students will be displaying and demonstrating a variety of performing arts, fine arts, and creative expressions through mixed media art, paintings, drawings and illustrations, short stories, musical performances, readings and much more! Also, art work will be available for purchase.

The TOPS program is a unique program for adults with Asperger’s Syndrome, High Functioning Autism and related disorders who are transitioning to higher education, independent living and/or employment. The program provides education and support to enable students to be successful in work, home and the community. Students learn how to develop social/relationship skills, increase independence, explore careers and active job search, succeed in college, develop interests, explore resources, participate in the community, and create a social network. Many students in the program have transitioned to work, community colleges, professional training schools and apartment living.

In addition to time and hard work that students devote to achieving their personal goals, they also allot time for artistic expression as a form of communicating their thoughts and feelings. The Expo provides them with a perfect opportunity to connect with the public through displays and performances. When asked about the importance of this event, Ryan Alves (participant) shared, “It’s a real honor to display my talents and to show that adults on the spectrum are talented and that others can appreciate us.”

This event promises to be fun and entertaining for all ages! For more information contact: Karen Lingenfelter-Carman, Program Coordinator at (925) 685-7340 ext. 6721 or lingenfelterk@mdusd.org.
