Life Worth Living: An interfaith dialogue

Wednesday evenings, Sept. 5 to Oct. 24, 6:30-9:30
590 Sutter Street (near Union Square in San Francisco)

What does it mean for a life to go well?
What do I need to do to lead a life worth living?
What does it mean for life to feel good?

The Life Worth Living program enables participants to reflect on these questions and equips them for their own life-long process of discerning the good life. Through a grant from the Templeton Foundation, this program, developed at Yale University, is being offered in the Bay Area to individuals in their 20s and early 30s.

Participants will engage in dialogue with leaders of various philosophies and faith traditions to explore how each imagines the good life.  We will also engage with individuals who understand their lives to be enriched by the practices of these traditions.  Weekly topics and practices will include:

  • Utilitarianism/Effective Altruism (generosity, doing the most good you can through personal choices)
  • The Buddha (compassion, mindfulness meditation)
  • The Torah and the Hebrew prophetic and wisdom writers (Sabbath, rest)
  • Jesus of Nazareth (grace, forgiveness)
  • Muhammad (prayer)
  • The teachings of Hinduism (unity)
  • Technology (influencing society, culture and community)

The program also includes an overnight retreat that invites participants to reflect on their own worldview and approach to the questions under consideration.

Attendance is limited to 20 individuals.  Contact Jane atlifeworthlivingsf@comcast.netto inquire about participating or for more information.

Overnight Retreat:  Friday evening Sept. 14 through late afternoon Saturday Sept. 15 in Los Altos.

Cost:  $250(to cover the cost of the retreat).
