Due to the energy and costs involved, our Social Justice Alliance won’t be able to continue hosting the Walnut Creek MLK Day Service we’ve hosted in past years.

Instead, we encourage you and your congregation to attend one of these regional services hosted by congregations of color, the NAACP, and our other partners around the county:

Saturday, January 15 – El Sobrante MLK Day of Service and Cleanup

Meet at El Sobrante Public Library, 4191 Appian Way, at 10am to sign in, borrow cleanup and safety equipment and select a location for cleanup. Event lasts until 1pm

El Cerritto Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration 2022:

Monday, January 17th from 9:00 am to noon
Del Norte BART Station to El Cerritto Station.

It is a car parade and Rally (program). The set up and start of the parade will be at El Cerrito Del Norte Bay Area Rapid Transit Station Parking Lot  ( El Cerrito Del Norte BART).  Cars will be decorated and lined up there at 9:00 AM. AT 10:00 AM. The PARADE starts south on San Pablo Avenue ending/arriving  at El Cerrito Plaza Bay Area Rapid Transit Station Parking Lot ( El Cerrito Plaza BART ). AT 11:00 AM the program with keynote speakers, and music  will be presented. AT 12:00 PM the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Day Celebration closes. Clean up of El Cerrito, California Plaza BART Parking Lot happens. Speakers include  Dr. Kenneth Kris Hurst Superintendent of West Contra Costa County Unified School District, Parade participants include Oakland Black Cowboys, various churches and organizations. Donations can be made to “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration”.

East Contra Costa has several Martin Luther King Day events scheduled for Monday, including ones in Antioch and Pittsburg.

From 1 to 3 p.m., Antioch Unified School District hosts a “Salute to Greatness” event on YouTube.

At 6 p.m., Pittsburg will host a socially distanced drive-in celebration outside of City Hall, 65 Civc Ave., to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The “Silence is not an Option” event will include live performers and a multimedia presentation.

Attendees will stay in their cars for the Pittsburg event, which will also be broadcast on FM radio. The event is sponsored by several groups and agencies, including the city of Pittsburg, Los Medanos Community Healthcare District and Souljahs, among others.

44th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. County Ceremony

Contra Costa County will commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the 44th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ceremony on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. In the spirit of Dr. King’s work, this year’s theme is “One People, One Nation, One Dream.”

The ceremony will begin at 11 am, and 2022 Humanitarian of the Year and Student Humanitarian will be introduced. Honorees will be recognized for their leadership, advocacy, and service to Contra Costa County, its residents, and communities and reflect the spirit of Dr. King’s work and achievements.

Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano hosts MLK Jr. Family Food Sort

Description: Please join the Food Bank for our Family Food Sort to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service by serving people in need in our community. Families with children as young as five years old are invited to bag or box fresh produce at our warehouse.
