The Green New Deal & Reparations:

August 5 at 10 am Pacific online

When it comes to principled, ambitious policy proposals that seek to fundamentally transform our society, the Green New Deal and reparations currently rise to the top. Yet, often they are discussed separately, despite clear and compelling connections. The Green New Deal Resolution proposed in Congress sought “to promote justice and equity by stopping current, preventing future, and repairing historic oppression.” At the same time, the demand for reparations compels our society to address the historic injustices of systemic racism, including environmental racism. To explore such connections and how faith communities can work to advance just policies, this webinar will feature three panelists:

-Congresswoman Barbara Lee, a leading champion of the Green New Deal and reparations

-Tamara Toles O’Laughlin, North America Director for 350.org

-Rev. Sekinah Hamlin, Economic Justice Minister for the United Church of Christ

This webinar is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt of the United Church of Christ Environmental Justice Ministry and the Rev. Michael Malcom of Alabama Interfaith Power & Light and the People’s Justice Council. The Rev. Dr. J. Alfred Smith, Sr., who is Pastor Emeritus for Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland, California, will additionally join the webinar to introduce Congresswoman Barbara Lee.
